Here are a few things that we agree upon. The world and the Earth are not the same thing. The Earth doesn't need saving. It's doing just fine and will be doing even better once we, humans, are gone... or when we get with the program and stop destroying so much of it. The world, on the other hand, definitely needs saving which is another way of saying that we need saving because humans have created this world. Unless you're somewhere in the jungle or the remote wilderness completely removed from modern civilization living solely off the land in harmony with nature then you need saving, too. I need saving. We, all, do.

It is an inside job. The major problem with the human world is that we have lost our connection to the natural one. Yes, we live on it. We drive by the natural world everyday and can see the trees whizzing by, but our connection to them and every other natural thing on the planet is convoluted at best. Walk into the produce section of any grocery store and there it is, completely separated from its source just like us. It's great if you enjoy going for a hike in the woods once in a while, but I'm sorry. This doesn't constitute living in connection with nature. It is not here simply for our recreation. We came from it. It's what made us.

We're not asking everyone to abandon their day jobs, throw their cell phones in the trash and run off into the wilderness to live with the animals. Your connection to the natural world is much closer than you think. It's inside you. You are part of it. You are a walking breathing extension of the Earth. You are the same as every other animal on the planet. You've just been taught to think of yourself as separate from them. A rhino is clearly different from a dolphin and a mouse is very different from a grizzly bear, but they all have many similarities. They are beautiful varieties of the same basic blueprint and so are you.
